Woman Fatally Struck By SEPTA Bus

No one should ever have to worry about whether or not they are safe in or around the roadways of Philadelphia. This is especially true for pedestrians who are using marked crosswalks. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in this area. Recently, a SEPTA bus fatally struck a pedestrian in West Philadelphia. At the Dan Doyle Law Group, we have extensive experience handling these cases. Here, our Philadelphia crosswalk accident attorneys want to discuss this incident as well as what you can do if you or a loved one is harmed.

What happened in this fatal crash?

According to police, a 37-year-old woman was attempting to cross 56th Street at Vine Street at around 10:30 on the morning of July 13, 2020. As she was attempting to cross the street using a marked crosswalk, she was struck by a SEPTA bus that was traveling north on 56th. Police say that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency medical services arrived. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Bus accidents can be particularly devastating. Due to the size and weight of these vehicles, including SEPTA buses, those involved in an accident can sustain severe injuries. This is particularly true when a pedestrian is involved.

During the latest reporting year of data available from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were 201 pedestrian fatalities and 4,090 pedestrian injuries. Unfortunately, nearly every reported pedestrian accident leads to some form of injury or a fatality. Pedestrians do not have much protection against the force of a vehicle slamming them, particularly larger vehicles such as local transit buses. It is not uncommon for pedestrians to sustain the following injuries in these incidents:

While we do not have all of the details regarding the incident mentioned above, we are concerned about the fact that this crash took place with a pedestrian using a marked crosswalk. Under Pennsylvania law, pedestrians have the right of way when using a marked crosswalk. Unfortunately, many drivers fail to properly yield for pedestrians. In some cases, we discover that pedestrian crashes are caused by distracted drivers who fail to see a pedestrian in time to prevent a serious accident.
