In 2017 over 11,000 car accidents were reported in Philadelphia and almost 8,000 resulting injuries occurred. Car accidents are almost as unpredictable as the injuries and damages that result. Some types of car accidents often cause greater injuries than others, but the fact is that all car accidents are dangerous and have the potential to cause serious injuries.
Single vehicle accidents – Single vehicle accidents often involve running off of the road, colliding with an animal or non-vehicle roadway obstruction, rollover, and losing control of the vehicle. Causes of single vehicle accidents can include defective automobile parts, poorly maintained roadways, unexpected roadway obstructions, and poor weather conditions.
Head on collisions – These accidents generally occur when a motor vehicle leaves its lane and crosses over into the lane of oncoming traffic.
Side impact collisions – This type of accident, also known as a T-bone collision, occurs when the front of one car strikes the side of another car. These accidents often occur when a car fails to yield when turning across oncoming traffic, when someone runs a red light or stop sign, or when a car is exiting a private driveway or parking lot to enter a public road.
Rear end – Rear end collisions occur when the front bumper of one car strikes the rear bumper of the car in front of it.
Rollover accidents – Rollover accidents are very dangerous accidents that can be single vehicle accidents or involve more than one vehicle. Certain types of vehicles are more likely to rollover than others including SUVs, trucks, and school buses.
Pedestrian – When a car strikes a pedestrian, the injuries can be extremely serious or fatal. Pedestrian accidents can occur as a result of a car failing to yield to the pedestrian when he or she has the right of way, when a pedestrian unexpectedly enters the road, and when a motor vehicle simply does not notice the pedestrian in the roadway until it is too late.
Bicyclist – Bicycle accidents can also cause serious and fatal injuries. These accidents can be caused by a driver failing to see the bicyclist in the roadway, a motor vehicle sideswiping a bicyclist when passing him or her, when a motor vehicle fails to yield to the bicyclist’s right of way at an intersection, or when a motor vehicle turns in front of a bicyclist causing an accident.
Large trucks – Truck accidents can result in catastrophic injuries due to the size and weight of large trucks. Large trucks also have dangerous tendencies such as jackknifing as a result of sudden braking or under riding when an accident causes a motor vehicle to slide underneath the back of a truck or sides of a trailer.
