We want to bring you a story from Butler County because it highlights the need for safety when it comes to our buses – particularly our school buses.
You may have seen the story. A few weeks ago, a school bus was traveling westbound in a construction zone on Route 228 when the right side of the bus clipped a cushion on the end of a concrete barrier, something that we are seeing happen more and more often.
The driver then lost control of the vehicle, hit a guardrail, and went over the embankment.
We are so grateful that nobody was killed in this accident, but we know it could have been much worse. There may be nothing more terrifying for a parent than receiving a phone call from the school district saying that your child has been in an accident.
“I was terrified,” said one girl’s mom whose daughter was in the accident. “I had no idea at that point if she was safe.”
School buses are everywhere, making sure our children get to and from school and to other school-related activities. Of the over 2,900 people involved in school bus crashes in the state in 2017, we know they went through some scary moments.
Over half (53.4 percent) of school bus crashes in 2017 were injury crashes.
Why school bus crashes so terrifying?
Because, they carry so many people at one time and any accident has the potential to become a mass casualty incident. Consider the there is no requirement that the children inside a bus have to use seat belts (most buses do not even have them) and you can understand how bad a crash can get.
There are plenty of other buses in and around the Philadelphia:
When it comes to bus crashes, there are two major things that can go wrong:
Bus companies have a responsibility to regularly inspect and maintain their vehicles and drivers should always operate responsibly – not distracted or impaired driving.
A failure of either of these can result in deadly consequences.
